Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1.5 cups granulated sugar
- 0.5 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 3 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- 0.5 cups black food coloring
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Optional garnishes: spooky sprinkles or meringue ghosts
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, vanilla extract, white vinegar, and black food coloring.
- Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until well combined. Do not overmix.
- Divide the batter evenly into the two prepared cake pans.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
- In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
- Once the cakes are cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
- Decorate with spooky sprinkles or meringue ghosts if desired.
